Area rugs are a great addition to any room in any home, office, workplace, or wherever you choose to liven up your living space. The following tips will help you to keep those area rugs charming and clean!

Vacuum area rugs often: The best way that you can care for your area rugs is by vacuuming them often. When dust and dirt settles in your area rugs they can cause damage to the fibers, by vacuuming them often you can avoid this damaging effect.Vacuum using even strokes against the nap of the rug. To find the nap, stroke your hand along the rug, the smooth side of the rug is the nap.

When to vacuum: For higher traffic area rugs try to vacuum them at least two to three times per week. For those that sustain lesser traffic, once per week should suffice.

Have delicate area rugs professionally cleaned: Sometimes a vacuum is too rough for the more delicate area rugs, like shag rugs. It is recommended that you have these rugs professionally cleaned every three to six months.

Rotate your rug: Rotating your rug will assure that it wears and fades evenly. To avoid having spots damaged by the sun or foot traffic, you should rotate your area rugs at least once every three to six months.

Rugs pads save area rugs: Always use a rug pad underneath your area rug. This will provide an extra cushioning for feet and will prevent dangerous slippages from occurring. A good quality rug pad will also greatly extend the life of your area rug.

Keep outdoor area rugs away from water: If you know that it is going to rain, or you are planning on being out of town for a while, move your outdoor area rugs to a climate controlled, interior setting while you are away. Try to minimize the impact of the outdoor elements such as water, from damaging the rugs, even water-resistant rugs.

Repair the rug before its too late: If you notice a fray beginning to form in your area rug, remove the rug from the flooring and call a local rug repair professional. The sooner that you catch the fray, the faster you can get it repaired. Letting a fray go will only cause greater and far more costly damage to you area rug.

Clean up and treat spills quickly: To best care for your area rug always make sure to take note of the cleaning instructions on the packaging. Test all rug cleaner sprays on a tiny piece of the rug before applying to ensure that they will not damage the rug. Timing is of the essence when it comes to spills.

Use the right cleaning solutions: For higher traffic area rugs you can use a carpet brush and a mild cleaning spray to clean them. Soak up the spills using a non-colored towel, and then follow the directions on the bottle to apply the cleaner. For delicate area rugs, like shag, use warm soap and water and dampen the spill up, then have the rug professionally cleaned as soon as you can.
