Those Thanksgiving Leftovers That Stuck Around

For food or beverage stains that have been lingering since Thanksgiving (or even last year’s holiday feast), a strategic combination of baking soda, water and white vinegar can perform Christmas miracles. Before completing these steps, first test the process on a low-profile section of your rug to check for any adverse reactions.

Step 1: If there’s crusted on food on your rug, first gently remove it with warm water and just a drop of dish soap. Be careful not to scrub too hard or you may damage your rug fibers! Blot out all soap suds with cool water and allow the spot to dry completely before moving on to step 2.

Step 2: Sprinkle just enough baking soda on your rug to cover the stain.

Step 3: Mix two cups of warm water with a tablespoon of white vinegar and, using a spray bottle, spritz a little of the mixture onto the stain.

Step 4: Step back and watch it fizz! Let the baking soda mixture soak in your rug for 5-10 minutes.

Step 5: Gently scrub at the stain with a brush

Step 6: Use a cloth and a little warm water to blot the area and soak up the remaining baking soda and vinegar.

Your Beloved Nephew’s Latest Spill

You watched it all happen in slow motion: the cup tumbled from your nephew’s hand, red juice sloshing out and falling to your beautiful, cream wool rug under the inevitable influence of gravity. The number one factor of keeping that from turning into a stain is to act fast!

Step 1: For wet spills, grab a cloth and blot at the stain – don’t rub it! Scrubbing at this stage will just embed the invading food or beverage deeper into your area rug.

For dry spills, reach for the vacuum and for semi-solids like chocolate and mashed potatoes scoop it up with a spoon or butter knife.

Step 2: Blot the spill with cool water, then blot dry.

Step 3: Mix a few drops of liquid dish soap with tepid water and begin gently wiping at the stain from the edges inward using a sponge or soft brush. If you scrub from the inside out, the mark will only spread.

Step 4: Blot with cool water to remove all soap, then blot dry.

The After-Party Cleanup

Area rugs made from natural fibers like jute, sisal and seagrass will provide you many long, happy years of use if you take good care of them.

Step 1: It’s best to lightly vacuum your area rugs once a week, but after the intense foot traffic of a holiday party they’ll need some TLC. Set your beater bar to the highest level, don’t vacuum the fringe and don’t forget the underside!

Step 2: Take care of any stains or spills before they’ve had too much time to set in.

Step 3: Consider bringing in a professional. Depending on the amount of foot traffic your rugs get, they should be professionally cleaned about once a year. What better time than after the holidays when they’ve gotten a lot of use?

When you take care of your area rugs, you will be rewarded with them lasting a lifetime.  If you follow these tips for cleaning and caring for your area rugs, you can make them last.  All eyes might very well be on your new seagrass rugs and you want it to stay that way.  With only a bit of vigilance, you will be able to preserve the natural good looks of them, regardless if they are sisal rugs, jute rugs or even your seagrass rugs.

Deco Sisal Rug

The care and cleaning requirements for area rugs will depend on the way they are made as well as what they are made from.  However, there are some things that do apply to all types of rugs regardless of what they are made from, how they are made or what they cost.

  • Use a pad underneath your rug. Rug pads will improve the appearance of the rug while also preventing it from slipping.  Anytime you use a rug pad, it needs to be about an inch smaller than the rug you will be using it under – don’t count any fringe in the length of the rug – so that it will not show.
  • Vacuum your area rugs lightly on a weekly basis. Don’t forget to vacuum the underside of it either.  If the rug is in an area that gets a lot of traffic, you will want to vacuum it more often.  If the rug has any fringe, don’t vacuum the fringe.  Keep the integrity of your rugs intact by using an upright style vacuum cleaner and by making sure that the beater bar is at the highest level.  Alternatively, if you have a stick vacuum or canister vacuum, these are less abrasive.
  • Don’t expose your area rugs to sunlight or heat for long periods of time.
  • Rotate your rugs on a regular basis so that they will wear evenly.
  • Have them cleaned professionally. This will depend on where the rug is located as well as on how much foot traffic it gets, but as a rule of thumb, once a year should be often enough.
  • Make sure that you take care of any stains as soon as possible. Use a clean, absorbent, white cloth and blot the stains immediately.  Do not rub the stain or use any type of product that contains silicone because these things will accelerate the soiling.

Anytime you get a special, natural rug that is made from things like seagrass, sisal or jute, they will last longer if you take proper care of them.  This type of area rug can make many types of statements as far as design goes.  Keep them looking great for years to come and your investment in them will pay off in the long run.

What Are Eco-Friendly Rugs

There are many different ways that people help to contribute to the sustainability of the earth by making choices that are eco – friendly.  What most people don’t realize is that there are even eco – friendly options when it comes to carpeting and area rugs.

Standard Carpeting, Area Rugs and Materials

The typical carpeting that covers about 70% of the floors in the US can contain materials that are dangerous and that can affect your health.  Many people are familiar with the smell of new carpet, but what you don’t know is that the odor comes from VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) that are emitted from the carpet as gases.  Some of the effects of exposure to these compounds are dizziness, fatigue, irritation in the throat and/or nose, allergic skin reactions and headaches.  In fact, it is recommended that carpets and area rugs that contain these compound are not used around babies.  These compounds can lead to allergies.

As if the health issues were not enough, manufacturing carpeting and area rugs like these causes health issues for the earth.  It takes and incredible amount of water and energy to make this kind of carpet and area rug.

The Alternative

Natural carpeting and area rugs offer life changing and exciting benefits to anyone who chooses to use it in their office or home.  Natural, eco – friendly carpets are typically made from renewable materials that come from a variety of plants.  Sisal rugs, for example are made from the fibers of the Mexican agave plant.  As these fibers grow, they are able to be harvested multiple times and this doesn’t cause there to be any harm to our planet.  Because of the natural materials that are used in these area rugs, there is also none of the manufacturing that is not eco – friendly.

Natural area rugs can be made from the fibers of plants – as we just saw – or from fibers that come from animals – such as wool.  Wool is a material that can be harvested and then made into a rug that will provide the person who buys it with a soft, durable rug that will not be worn out very quickly or damage quickly.

For those who suffer from allergies, natural area rugs are the ideal option.  Natural area rugs greatly reduce the amount of allergens that are in the air and they are much easier to maintain and clean.  Natural area rugs are also available in a wide variety of sizes, styles, colors, shapes and patterns.  They can be made from materials such as cork, jute, seagrass, organic cotton or wool, bamboo and sisal.

Natural area rugs will add vitality and character to any room.  Make the decision now to check out some area rugs such as the ones here at Natural Area Rugs and bring a little bit of eco – friendliness home with you.
