After making an investment in an area rug, the last thing you want to do is ruin the rug in a few years. It can take months of searching, looking and finding the money to purchase the rug of your dreams, why not take care of it like an investment? Quality area rugs are intended to last a lifetime and should be able to withstand heavy foot traffic, but many wear out way before their time because they are not taken care of properly.

One of the best investments you can make to take care of your area rug is to purchase a floor mat. Rug pads are a protective barrier that absorbs the shock of people walking on your rug. The pad protects your area rug and the floor it is resting on. If your area rug is placed on hard wood or laminate flooring, the backing on the area rug can rub up against the floor and destroy the finish you worked so hard to protect.

Just like area rugs, rug pads come in a variety of price ranges and quality. It’s best to buy a rug pad that is moderately priced and good quality. Stay away from rug pads at big box stores because the quality may not help extend the life your rug very much. Don’t make the foolish mistake of spending money on an outstanding rug to place on the floor and get trampled on without protection.
