Get the Benefits of “Green” Carpeting, in Your Choice of Colors

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

You’ve decided to shop for new carpet. You’re looking for just the right color and just the right look and feel.

But are you also considering problems like off-gassing, dust-retention and toxins used in manufacturing?

If not, you should.

Both the government and the carpet industry have been taking a closer look at the environmental effects of carpeting. As a result, we now know that “green” carpet products, like natural fiber rugs and wool, are the best choices if you want a healthy home.

Synthetic carpets contain dozens of chemicals and gasses, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other toxins. VOCs and other toxins in synthetic rugs can cause indoor air-quality problems, triggering reactions in many people, especially when carpets “off-gas” following installation.

Heavy offgassing occurs when a synthetic carpet is unrolled in your home. It releases VOCS and other potential toxins into the air almost immediately, and for as long as 72 hours. Then offgassing can continue for months as VOCs and toxins slowly release from the carpet.

Particularly if you have children in your home, you want to avoid this potential hazard.

And you easily can by making your next rug purchase a natural fiber rud purchase. You’ve got a wealth of natural alternatives to choose from, wool, seagrass, sisal and bamboo among them, that are beautiful, “green” alternatives to traditional synthetic rugs.

Check out our selection today by visiting our website.

Decorating a Nursery? Keep Baby’s Health in Mind and Use Natural Fiber Rugs

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Decorating a nursery for a newborn that’s on the way? Or the baby’s already arrived and you’re wanting to redecorate?

When doing so, keep your child’s health in mind. Some experts claim that nurseries are the “sickest” room in the house, because parents think more about how a room will look rather than about what’s best for the child’s health.

Unknowlingly, parents buy what they think will look cute, rather than what’s safe and healthy. Everything in a baby’s room, from the paint on the walls to the carpet on the floor, can emit harmful volatile organic chemicals (VOC), which can cause breathing problems.

And lung disease and breathing problems, which are frequently associated with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), are the number one cause of death in infants less than a year old, according to the American Lung Association.

What can you do to prevent potential health problems for your child? Here are a few suggestions–

  • Use eco-friendly paints
  • Avoid vinyl wallpaper which can trap moisture and help mold grow. The plasticizers in the vinyl can also emit VOCs.
  • Furnish the room with solid wood furniture and avoid particleboard, which emits VOCs.
  • Select a mattress that does not contain vinyl.
  • Use natural fiber rugs

By using natural fiber rugs, such as sisal, seagrass, mountain grass, jute, bamboo or wool, you are using materials that do not emit harmful toxins into the air. In fact, many natural fiber rugs absorb dust and toxins that might otherwise be released into the air in a room.

Bernadette Upton, who has created a nursery in the American Lung Association’s Designer Showhouse in West Palm Beach, Florida, to illustrate that a beautiful room can be healthy and breathable, says, “People don’t realize they could be compromising the baby’s health.”

Using the wrong materials “could be the trigger of asthma and lifelong illness.”

So, if you’ve got a newborn in the house, or one on the way, you’ve got the most important reason in the world to use natural fiber rugs in your home. And Natural Area Rugs is your source for the largest selection and best prices on natural area rugs.

A Guide to Making Your Rug a Wall Hanging

Friday, September 15th, 2006

I recently wrote about using rugs as wall hangings.

A few customers have asked about the best way to hang a rug on a wall. Actually, it isn’t all that difficult to do.

Start by choosing one of our natural area rugs.

Next, you’ll need the following materials:

  • A piece of unfinished plywood (the same dimensions as your rug)
  • Two pieces of Velcro (the same length as your rug)
  • Picture Hangers, Picture Hanging Wire, and Screw Eyes
  • Glue

Start with the piece of unfinished plywood. Along the length of each side of the plywood, glue a piece of Velcro. If you’d prefer to use something besides Velcro, you can also use brads, carpet tacks or drapery fasteners.

Glue or sew the remaining strips of Velcro to the back of the rug, making certain they will match up with the Velcro on the plywood.

Attach two screw eyes to the back of the wood near the top. Attach the picture hanging wire to the screw eyes.

Choose where you want your rug to hang.

Stretch the picture wire and hold th ewood against the wall. Draw the wire upwards until you have found the horizontal center of your rug. Mark his spot with a pencil. This is where the picture hanger hook will be set.

Place your picture hanger against the wall. Nail it into place so that the hook hangs at your mark. You may want to use an anchor and screw if the wall is thin or you have concerns that the picture hanger might come out of the wall.

Attach the rug to the plywood and hang.

Now you’ve got your rug wall hanging.

Guide to Buying Your Natural Fiber Rug

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

Buying an area rug may not be as simple as the novice buyer would hope. Being a room’s centerpiece, choosing the right rug is perhaps one of the most critical decisions you or your interior designer can make in creating the desired ambience or atmosphere for your home. But there’s really no reason to panic. The fact that you’re considering to purchase a natural fiber rug already indicates that you’re moving in the right direction. Natural fibers such as seagrass and wool have always proven to be more durable than synthetic materials such as nylon or olefin. In terms of aesthetics, natural fibers have always gotten the nod of designers since handwoven rugs posses an inherent beauty that cannot be replicated by mass-produced or machine made carpeting. These products’ natural colors and basic patterns can easily match any furniture and décor.  Pattern differences make natural fiber rugs “perfectly imperfect”. When tackling environmental issues, synthetics are out of the question as they’ve often been frowned upon for emitting harmful gases in the atmosphere. On the other hand, natural fibers are hypoallergenic and actually help to filter the air by helping trap contaminants.

To make things easier for you or your designer, we’ve listed a few things that you might want to consider before purchasing your new natural fiber rug.

Request a Sample

Obtaining a sample is one of the best ways of assuring that your rug’s color or pattern would match your room’s furniture. A sample allows you to readily compare the rug material to your floor, walls, furniture and drapes. The last thing you’d want to do is to re-wrap and return a rug in exchange for a new one (there are no returns for made to order or customized rugs).

Take Photos of Your Room

Taking a picture of your room allows you to get a better perspective of how your rug would blend in with your furniture, which is important in choosing the right shade or pattern for your rug. This enables you to compare your rug with other elements inside your room.

Check for Measurements

Avoid the hassle of having to return or repair a rug just because it’s a few inches longer or smaller than what your room requires. Using tape to outline the area that will be covered by the rug will help you visualize the appropriate rug size for your room.

Determine Your Rug’s Purpose

Is your rug to be used in a hallway where you expect significant amount of traffic or under the dining table where you expect spills? Or are you looking for a material that’s soft enough for you to walk on barefoot? It’s important to compare your needs with the characteristics of each type of rug to assure that your needs are met. Please click the following links to get a better idea of the basic characteristics of our natural fiber rugs:

Use a Rug Pad

One thing that a lot of customers overlook is the importance of buying a rugpad, which could be the best thing you can do for both your floor and your rug. Rugpads provide extra cushioning and that added grip which helps anchor your rug to your floor without damaging its surface. Rugpads create a breathable space between your rug and your floor which promotes air circulation, preventing dirt and bacteria buildup. Using rugpads is one of the most economical ways to help maintain your rug and floor.

These are just some useful tips that might help you decide which rug material would be appropriate for your room. Remember, shopping for rugs should be a fun and enjoyable experience, so don’t restrict your imagination. Go ahead and test your creativity. But if you still have apprehensions about making these decisions on your won, you can always consult a local designer.

Sisal and Seagrass Flooring for a Greener Environment

Monday, August 28th, 2006

For decades, synthetic carpeting composed of nylon and other petroleum based fibers have dominated the floor covering market. Consumers have depended heavily on these mass-produced carpet and rug materials to decorate as well as provide cushioning and comfort to their abode. Artificial floor covering soon evolved into a necessity as carpeting was made available to virtually every home across the nation. As demand increased for wall to wall carpeting, nylon rugs proliferated while consumers ignored the detrimental effects that these materials had on our environment.

During production alone, the energy wastage in manufacturing nylon, olefin and other petroleum based substances is considerable. Emissions from factories also pose immediate harm to the environment. Composed of non-biodegradable substance, disposal also poses certain problems.

Soon environmental issues started to exert pressure in the floor covering industry, prompting consumers as well as some manufacturers to find alternative sources of floor covering materials.

This ushered the era of natural fiber floor covering whose popularity has far exceeded the expectations of manufacturers and consumer alike.

Just over a decade ago, the terms sisal and seagrass hardly meant anything to designers. Hemp had its uses but was somewhat limited to industrial purposes. Today, natural fiber area rugs and carpet can be found in furniture stores and home accent sections of just about every department store in the country. Consumers have grown to appreciate the intrinsic beauty of these products which simply cannot be replicated by artificial materials.

Natural Area Rugs, the country’s leading distributor of natural fiber floor covering products plays a vital role in educating consumers of the benefits of using bio-degradable and environmentally friendly natural fibers. Rugs made from sisal, wool, seagrass, and bamboo constitute their product line which has received high marks from both designers and customers. The exquisite weave patterns and rich colors of their rugs reflect their craftsmanship and high quality standards that have become their trademark.

Visit their store at www.NaturalAreaRugs.com and experience the convenience of purchasing affordable, designer quality floor covering products online.
